Description:
Design the geometry and composition of a segmented bowl, calculate and prepare a material cut-list, cut segments according to the cut-list using a jig for accuracy, assemble the segments into rings, assemble the rings into a bowl blank, and turn a finished bowl from the blank. Precision in design and stock preparation will be emphasized, and many aspects of bowl turning will be involved in completing the project.
Day 1: Discuss the theory of segmentation and the various approaches to cutting and assembling segments, design the geometry and composition of a Polka-Dot bowl, calculate and prepare a cut-list for each element of the bowl, and discuss selecting, mill, and gluing-up suitable stock. Use a precision jig to cut the required segments, then glue-up the individual segments into precise, gap-free rings.
Day 2: Clean up and assemble the glued-up rings into a complete bowl blank and mount the blank on a glue block ready for turning.
Day 3: Turn a completed bowl with polka-dot ornamentation from the assembled blank.
