Objectives:

  1. Obtain a basic understanding of bowl turning fundamentals, including safety, equipment selection, tool sharpening, grain orientation, workpiece mounting, tool control, and technique.

Description:

Students will review the Woodshop Bowl Turning Guidelines, and will learn the different parts of the lathe and tools commonly used in woodturning. Tool sharpening techniques will be demonstrated and practiced. Workpiece mounting techniques for bowl turning will be discussed and demonstrated, and each student will prepare and mount a provided workpiece on the lathe.

Students will then practice the techniques discussed by turning a complete bowl. After shaping the bowl exterior, proper sanding techniques will be taught. Once the exterior is completed, students will reverse and remount the bowl and turn and sand the inside. Finally, the bowl will again be reverse-mounted to complete turning the bowl bottom. Finishing options will be discussed. Safety will be stressed at all times. This project will provide practical experience in basic bowl turning technique.
