Basic Turning 1: Spindle Turning

Objectives:

1. Objective: Obtain a basic understanding of spindle turning fundamentals, including safety, equipment selection, tool sharpening, grain orientation, workpiece mounting, tool control, and technique.

Description:

The lathe intro class will cover a variety of subjects beginning with safety. We will discuss both what to do and what not to do when using the lathe. We will review where tools are located and which tool to use in various situations. Next we will cover the different parts of the lathe and their functions. The shop has an outstanding sharpening system and we will practice sharpening. Next you will learn how to prepare a piece of wood for both bowl and spindle turning. Finally, you will have time to do some actual turning.

When you have finished this course, we ask that you practice and become proficient using what you learned before taking the bowl turning class.
