Making Clocks

   or equivalent experience.

Materials: total material fee (est $30) to be collected at 1st session

Objectives:

  1. Create an intricate functioning clock, complete with clockworks, and laser-engraved numerals

Description:

Session 1: Discuss clock designs, size, face, wood types, and come to a consensus about this project's design. Cut pieces for outside rings, drill insert holes, install inserts. Glue rings together into continuous rings. Plane the rings for flatness.

Session 1 homework: Sand rings to 220 surface finish.

Session 2: Cut 12 segments for clock face; glue them to plywood backing. Rout rings to create a groove which will accept the clock face.

Instructor will cut clock faces to fit, and will engrave numerals.

Session 3: Discuss clockworks and how they are installed. Apply finish and install the clockworks. Final discussion about setting and adjusting time, as needed.
